Core training for dummies

They don’t actually have a yellow “for dummies” book on core training, but there is a “Complete Idiot’s Guide to Core Conditioning - Illustrated”. I’m not a complete idiot, so I’ll pass on that one ;) I do like to “keep it simple”, so I’ve decided to go with “The Five Exercises You Must Do” from About.com. It isn’t exactly a core training program, but it is a strength training program that works multiple muscle groups. I think it will help me get started.

The 5 exercises are squats, push ups, lunges, the plank and lat pull downs or bent over rows. Since I train at home, I will do the bent over row instead of the lat pull down. Instead of the traditional bent over row, I’m going to do the single leg bent over row from the Core Performance book, because it works more muscle groups. Wall slides are basically squats, so I will stay with them for now, and try to work up to the single leg squats. They are very effective, but I’m tired of being in excruciating pain the day after doing them! The Core Performance book wants me to do 4 different kinds of lunges, but for now, I’d like to master one. I’m a little confused about the plank. I’ve seen it done from the fore arms, but I’ve also seen it held in the push up position. Is the fore arm method the equivalent to a “girlie” push up? Maybe I do need that book for complete idiots.

Using the pace you gave me, I get 1:36:35 for 9 miles. That work for you?

Let me know when/if you do a little post, so I can include a link. Look for a full race report sometime on Monday.

    XOXO

[...] I’ve spent a lot of time reading about core training. I’ve probably spent more time reading about it than I have spent doing it. Do you suppose that is part of the problem? As I mentioned in the “Core Training for Dummies” post, I need a plan that is simple. I particularly like the Five Exercises You Must Do, and the strength training exercises from “Runner’s World Run Less, Run Faster”, which is the FIRST training program book. The FIRST strength training plan consists of [...]
