Photographs and memories

Whenever I read about sisters running together, I get all choked up. I’ve read a lot of great blog reports this year. Chef Betsy ran a triathlon with her sister. Monk_monkey ran the Hagg Lake Ultra and the Bataan Memorial Death March with her sister, and also went on a few training runs. JustRun trained for and ran the Las Vegas Half Marathon with her sister. Not only have I had the pleasure of meeting all of these lovely ladies, I’ve even had the pleasure of meeting 2 of the sisters. Sisters are special in a way that you can’t explain to anyone who doesn’t have one, but if you do, you know what I’m talking about.

I run with my sister, too, but not in the traditional sense. In the past year I’ve run close to 2,000 miles, and at least 1,000 were on the treadmill. I don’t watch television. I either look out the window, or look at the photos on my wall.

The view from my treadmill

Most of the photos are of my sister Roxy. She was my best friend, but after our dad died, she moved further away, and we didn’t see each other as often. We stopped getting together for birthdays, holidays and celebrations. Then she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through chemo, and made a complete recovery, but 5 years later it came back. She died in 2001. Today was her birthday.

My sister Roxy

My sister Roxy was the most lively, fun loving person I’ve ever known. Whatever she did, she did 100%. Here she is competing with one of her miniature horses.

I searched and searched for photos of the two of us together, but all I could find were my wedding pictures, and these 2 photos. The first was taken in 1978. The bottom photo was taken in 1990, when big hair was still in.

Photographs and memories

Life is short, and you don’t know how it will turn out, so take my advice. Celebrate special days with the people you love, even if they are just made up celebrations, and take lots of pictures!

Beautiful post, Diva. There is nothing like sisters and the memories we make with them.
I thought of you last night, while I was on my treadmill in my office, looking out the window.

    Happy Birthday, Roxy.

Thanks for the reminder, Diva. I have one of those big hair pics with my sis too. She is going to Hawaii for Christmas but I should make an effort to see her and get some recent pics together. That damn breast cancer. I’m sorry, I know you must miss her.

    Take care.

Oh Jodie — this brought tears to my eyes! (And for a totally different reason once I saw the “big hair” photos!!!) How sorry I am to hear about the loss of your sister. It’s a somber reminder that I need to enjoy more time with my sisters before it’s too late.
