Races

I missed out on most of the 2008 races, but I did manage to get a PR in New Orleans at the Mardi Gras Marathon. My 5:33:06 finish time wasn’t all that impressive, but considering that I thought my legs were done at the halfway mark, I was surprised at the outcome. I didn’t take many walk breaks, but I did stop and visit with the volunteers at each water stop. I also paused for a couple of beers along the way. I will eventually run a serious marathon, but not in New Orleans, and possibly not until I retire.

My big goal race for 2009 is the Lake Tahoe Triple Marathon, a series of three marathons in three days. It seemed a bit crazy at first, but compared with the people who run 50 and 100 mile races, this is seeming more and more doable. I don’t have any time objectives. I just want to finish. Along the way, I’ll run a few races for the training miles. My experience with training for longer distance is that it improves your times over shorter distances. I’m hoping to see my 5K, 10K and half marathon times return to their 2007 ranges. The tricky part is remembering that the goal is to get to Lake Tahoe strong and uninjured. Potential races for 2009 include the Nookachamps Half Marathon, Mercer Island Half Marathon, Whidbey Island Marathon or Half, Yakima River Canyon Marathon, Kirkland Half Marathon and North Olympic Discovery Marathon. In July, I’m going to try for a mini triple, with three half marathons over three days. It’s all about training for recovery!
